ROMANCE Theater of Romance ran on the CBS network as a filler show between 1943 and 1957. Even the locale changed from New York to Los Angeles in 1945. A television special featuring lots of dancing. What else would you expect? Originally aired 24 April 1959. TV specials were common in the late-1950s. It is unfortunate that this copy is a bit low-resolution and lacks the original colours (does the colour version still exist?). It does however contain all of the original commercials: all two of them! Note: Although this TV special is public domain, the original music is still copyrighted.

In 1945, Jack Benny starred in his last major motion picture, "The Horn Blows at Midnight," as a band member who dreams he's an angel sent to destroy the Earth.  The film did respectable business but wasn't an overwhelming success (doubtlessly due to the timing, coming at the end of WW2) and Benny soon began joking about what a dismal failure the film was... which quickly became a running gag on his TV and radio shows, leading people to believe the movie actually was an epic bomb. In...

Adventures By Morse – 1944 The title of this series refers to the writer and director of the show, Carlton E. Morse. There were 52 episodes of this thirty-minute adventure series featuring a San Francisco detective, Captain Bart Friday, and his sidekick, Skip Turner. Captain Friday and Skip roamed the world together seeking danger and solving mysteries. The stories told bordered on the supernatural, though there was usually a rational explanation for the superbly written terror-chillers.

THEATER FIVE Theater Five was ABC's attempt to revive radio drama during the early 1960s. The series name was derived from its time slot, 5:00 PM. Running Monday through Friday, it was an anthology of short stories, each about 20 minutes long. News programs and commercials filled out the full 30 minutes. There was a good bit of science fiction and some of the plots seem to have been taken from the daily newspaper. Fred Foy, of The Lone Ranger fame, was an ABC staff announcer in the early 60s,...

DIMENSION X Dimension X was first heard on NBC April 8, 1950, and ran until September 29, 1951. Strange that so little good science fiction came out of radio; they seem ideally compatible, both relying heavily on imagination. Some fine isolated science fiction stories were developed on the great anthology shows, Suspense and Escape . But until the premiere of Dimension X -- a full two decades after network radio was established -- there were no major science fiction series of broad appeal to...

CRIME CLASSICS Crime Classics came to CBS September 30, 1953 and was a neat little series of "true crime stories". This show introduces itself succinctly: "A series of true crime stories from the records and newspapers of every land, from every time. Your host each week, is Mr. Thomas Hyland -- connoisseur of crime, student of violence, and teller of murders. " Thomas Hyland is played by Lou Merrill, although you'd never know it was an "actor" doing the part. The...

This rare Sherlock Holmes film was released at the same time as the Raymond Massey picture "The Speckled Band". The story is partly based on two Conan Doyle short stories: "The Final Problem" and "The Empty House". Sceptical about the potential success of the film, the producers sold the rights to the film to "First Division Pictures" for 800 pounds. The film was released in July 1931 under the title "Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour". It was very...

DR. KILDARE Dr. Kildare was produced for syndication in 1949 at WMGM , New York. It was based on the popular Dr. Kildare movies of the late 1930's and early 1940's, and brought to the microphone the stars of that series, Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore . Ayres played the young, idealistic Dr. James Kildare; Barrymore, ever in character, was the crusty, loveable diagnostician, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. THE WHISTLER You're walking alone on the street at night, but then you hear another set of footsteps and a haunting tune being whistled by an unseen stranger. Fritz Lang used an similar premise in his 1930s German movie with Peter Lorre playing M , a psychopathic murderer of children. But the American radio series was even creepier. The unseen Whistler didn't kill anyone (that we know of), but he certainly loved watching murders take place, narrating them for us, and chuckling at the suffering...

INNER SANCTUM MYSTERIES The anthology series featured stories of mystery, terror and suspense, and its tongue-in-cheek introductions were in sharp contrast to shows like Suspense and The Whistler . The early 1940s programs opened with Raymond Edward Johnson introducing himself as, "Your host, Raymond," in a mocking sardonic voice. A spooky melodramatic organ score (played by Lew White) punctuated Raymond's many morbid jokes and playful puns. Raymond's closing was an elongated...

THE DEVIL AND MR. O A transcribed syndication of original broadcasts from Lights Out . With its premiere on the nationwide NBC hookup in 1935, Lights Out was billed "the ultimate in horror." Never had such sounds been heard on the air. Heads rolled, bones were crushed, people fell from great heights and splattered wetly on pavement. There were garrotings, choking, heads split by cleavers, and, to a critic at Radio Guide, "the most monstrous of all sounds, human flesh being...

(82 Episodes) UPDATE 2011-03-14: 14 additional episodes UPDATE 2010-07-13: 19 additional episodes "Five Minute Mysteries" was broadcast on the MBS (Mutual Broadcasting System) from 1947-08-10 thru to 1950-03-27. Listening carefully to every word spoken about these terrific (but brief) mysteries was essential, as each mystery was very well written. It is often difficult to come up with the right answer and it is comparable to the Ellery Queen One Minute Mysteries! OTR * def gp ddh

Old Time Radio Programs "Sunrise and Sunset, Promise and Fulfilment, Birth and Death, The whole Drama of Life is played out in the Sands of Time" This is a great series where the main theme seems to be Retribution. Imported from Austrailia it ran from 1946 until 1948. Stories as told by Father Time. Sort of like Twilight Zone for the radio.
